DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CHOOSE A STUDY MAJOR FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY?

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CHOOSE A STUDY MAJOR FOR YOUR UNIVERSITY?

Many students reach Grade 12 and still have many questions: What am I truly interested in? Which field of study offers good career opportunities? Should I choose a “popular” major just because my friends are choosing it? When studying abroad, should I choose vocational training, college, or university?

In reality, choosing the right field of study is one of the most important decisions at the age of 17–18. A suitable choice not only helps you achieve better academic results but also saves valuable time, money, and creates better career opportunities in the future.

1. WHY DO MANY FINAL-YEAR SCHHOL PUPILS STILL STRUGGLE TO CHOOSE A FIELD OF STUDY?

There are several common reasons:

  • They do not fully understand their own strengths, interests, and abilities.
  • They have not had enough access to information about new and emerging career fields.
  • They are influenced by the choices of friends or family members.
  • They focus only on famous universities without researching whether the major suits them.
  • They are unaware that post-secondary education offers many pathways beyond just “university”.

Unfortunately, many students only realise after starting their studies that their chosen field is not suitable for them. This may lead to a lack of motivation, changing majors, or spending additional years restarting their academic journey.

2. HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FIELD OF STUDY FROM THE BEGINNING?

At Duc Anh EduConnect, we guide students based on four key factors:

a. Academic Ability and Foreign Language Level.

Ask yourself:

  • Which subjects are you strongest in? Mathematics, Science, Business, Languages, Social Sciences, or Arts?
  • Does your current English level meet the entry requirements of your chosen institution?
  • Do you need additional English preparation, academic English, or a Foundation program before starting your main course?

Understanding your academic strengths helps you choose a field where you can perform well and enjoy the learning journey.

b.  Personal Interests and Aspirations: This is an important factor that many students often overlook. Your interests give you the motivation to study long-term, while your aspirations help you define a clearer direction for your future.

Ask yourself:

  • What do you enjoy doing when nobody is forcing you?
  • Do you prefer working with people, technology, data, ideas, or creative activities?
  • Would you like a dynamic career with frequent interaction and movement, or a stable career requiring deep expertise?
  • What is your dream for the next 5–10 years?

For example:

  • If you enjoy designing, drawing, and creating content → you may be suitable for Graphic Design, Animation, Digital Media.
  • If you enjoy communication, organising events, and meeting people → you may be suitable for Marketing, Hospitality, Tourism, Public Relations.
  • If you enjoy technology and solving problems → you may be suitable for Information Technology, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security.

c. Family Financial Capacity: a higher tuition fee does not always mean a better choice. The most important factor is choosing a program with a total cost that matches your family’s financial capacity and long-term study plan.

Students and families should consider:

  • Tuition fees
  • Living expenses
  • Accommodation costs
  • Insurance
  • Transportation
  • Other study-related expenses

A realistic financial plan helps students focus on their studies with confidence.

d. Future Career Goals: try answering these questions:

  • Do you want to enter the workforce early or continue to higher education?
  • Would you like to work in Vietnam or in an international environment?
  • Are you interested in a stable career, creative industry, business, or technology?

Once you can answer these questions, choosing the right study field becomes much clearer.

3. POPULAR STUDY FIELDS TODAY

Below are some of the most popular study areas chosen by students in recent years:

  • Information Technology & Artificial Intelligence (AI), Programming, Data Science, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
