Canadian Student visa (Study Permit)

Canadian Student visa (Study Permit)

Applying for a Study Permit is more complex than applying for student visas to many other countries. Students must meet strict documentation requirements. Visa applications are processed at the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City. The actual processing time ranges from 2 – 12 months. Because of this, students planning to study in Canada should prepare well in advance and even have a Plan B for their study plans. The visa approval rate for students assisted by Duc Anh EduConnect is approximately 85 – 90%, thanks to strong cooperation between our team and the students.

To study in Canada, Vietnamese students must obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) and a Study Permit, unless they will study English for less than 6 months.

1. Study Visa Application Documents

All required forms must be completed fully and accurately according to the requirements of the Canadian visa office. The main document categories include:

  • Applicant’s personal documents:
    • Academic transcripts and report cards;
    • Diploma of the highest level completed;
    • English proficiency certificate (if available);
    • Passport;
    • Birth certificate;
    • Household registration book;
    • Police Certificate (for applicants aged 16 and older);
    • Custodianship documents for students under 16;
    • Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian institution and proof of tuition payment;
    • Photos;
    • Canada Study Visa application forms.
  • Proof of financial support:
    • Bank savings account confirmation;
    • Documents proving the financial sponsor’s income;
    • Proof of ownership of movable or immovable assets.

2. Steps to apply for a Study Permit

The basic steps include:

  • Completing application procedures with the Canadian school, including custodianship arrangements for international students;
  • Completing the visa application file and translating documents;
  • Submitting the application to the Canadian visa office through IOM;
  • Receiving updates from the visa office and providing any additional information required;
  • Receiving the visa and preparing for the study program.

3. Important Notes

  • Police Certificate: Applicants aged 16 or older must obtain a Police Certificate issued by the Department of Justice in their place of residence.
  • Custodianship for students under 18: Students under 18 must have a legal custodian in Canada.
  • CAQ – Québec Acceptance Certificate: If you plan to study in Québec, you must obtain a CAQ issued by the Québec Ministry of Education. You may download the application form here.
  • Statement of Purpose (Study Plan): Students must provide a clear explanation of their study plan in Canada and list all documents included in their application.
  • Visa application fee: The fee is USD 140. This fee is non-refundable and may change over time.
  • Medical examination: Once the visa office grants preliminary approval, applicants will be required to undergo a medical examination at a designated clinic. The results will be sent directly to the visa office for further processing.
