Primary Education in Malaysia
Primary education begins at age seven and lasts for six years. Students may choose from different types of schools based on the language of instruction, including Malay-medium, Chinese-medium, Tamil-medium public schools, as well as private and international schools that use English as the main language.
Regardless of school type, Malay and English are compulsory subjects. Public primary schools do not charge tuition fees, while private and international schools operate on a fee-paying basis.
At the end of primary school, students take national assessments depending on the curriculum used by their school.
Lower and Upper Secondary Education
Secondary education lasts for five years, from Form 1 to Form 5, and is divided into two stages:
In public schools, Malay is the main language of instruction, while English remains a compulsory subject. Students also study mathematics, science, humanities, Islamic or moral education, and specialized subjects depending on their chosen stream in upper secondary.
At the end of Form 5, students take the SPM examination – the Malaysian Certificate of Education – which is equivalent to the UK GCSE (previously known as the O-Level). SPM results play a key role in determining pathways into pre-university or higher education.
Pre-University: Form 6 and Matriculation
