Finnish student visa

For study programmes lasting more than 3 months in Finland, students are required to apply for a Student Residence Permit, which is typically valid for 2 years. To obtain the residence permit card, you must first have a valid passport and an official letter of admission from a Finnish higher-education institution.

It is recommended that you apply for the residence permit as early as possible, immediately after receiving the official offer of admission.

The application for the Student Residence Permit can be submitted online via the Enter Finland e-service or completed using the paper form. However, you must still schedule an appointment at the Finnish Embassy to submit your documents, provide biometric fingerprints, and take part in a short interview (if required). Duc Anh will assist you with form submission, appointment booking, and interview preparation.

Required documents:

  • Residence permit application (form OLE-OPI) – completed online or on paper;
  • Letter of admission from a Finnish educational institution;
  • Original proof of valid health insurance;
    Original proof of financial resources;
  • Confirmation of paid tuition fees or scholarship;
  • Valid passport;
  • Supplement form OLEL_PK: must include a passport photo and signature (photo must follow police-issued guidelines or include a retrieval code from the photo shop);
  • Colour copy of the passport, including personal information and all stamped pages;
  • Other supporting documents: transcripts, diplomas, original certificates of previous studies, employment certificates (if any).

Where to submit your application:

  • Hanoi: Ocean Park Building, Room 207 – 2nd Floor, No. 1 Dao Duy Anh, Phuong Mai Ward, Dong Da District;
  • Ho Chi Minh City: Resco Building, 3rd Floor, 94-96 Nguyen Du, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1.

Education system in Finland

The education system in Finland is completely free of charge for Finnish citizens and is divided into the following levels: Early childhood education and care (non-compulsory): for children aged 0-5; Pre-primary education (non-compulsory): 1 year, for children aged 6; Compulsory basic education: lasts 9 years, for students aged 7-16. This is the only compulsory level of schooling for Finnish students (equivalent to primary and lower secondary education). Students attend comprehensive schools: during the first 6 years, each class is taught by one main teacher (except for arts and skills subjects), and during the final 3 years, students are taught by subject-specific teachers (e.g., Mathematics, Science, etc.).
