General information about Italy

General information about Italy

Italy (Italian: Italia) is a unitary parliamentary republic located in Europe. Its territory extends into the central Mediterranean region, with the Alpine range forming the northern land border with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Due to its distinctive shape, Italy is often described as “boot-shaped.” The country features predominantly temperate seasonal and Mediterranean climates.

Italy was unified in 1861 and has made significant contributions to cultural and social development throughout the Mediterranean. Numerous cultures and civilizations have existed here since prehistoric times.

Today, Italy has the third-largest nominal GDP in the Eurozone and ranks ninth in the world (2017). The country scores very high on the Human Development Index and ranks sixth globally in life expectancy. Italy plays an influential role in European and global economic, military, cultural, and diplomatic affairs, and is considered a regional power. It is one of the founding and leading members of the European Union and participates in major international organizations such as the United Nations, NATO, OECD, OSCE, WTO, G7, G20, and the Union for the Mediterranean.

Italy also holds the world record for the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with 53 sites, and ranks fifth globally in international tourist arrivals.
